The Town of Windsor engaged KBA to help determine the best solution to accommodate the needs of a modern public safety facility. The solution was to renovate part of the town’s existing DPW building for the police station and renovate the existing public safety facility to accommodate both the Fire and EMS Departments. The design challenge was adapting the warehouse building intended for business to an essential emergency operation facility which required clear and separate access/egress points for multiple user groups. For safety and security, public access needed to be separate from both the officer access and the detention release area.

The DPW building also required redundant site access for the police department. Having only one way into and out of the site was a potential risk to the general public during emergencies. The building’s close proximity to the neighboring property line and a significant grade change was another challenge. It required a unique design solution to provide emergency vehicles the maneuverability to get to the rear of the site and sallyport.
